What Is Cupping Therapy?

By Tanja Rodriguez, LMT · Relax & Renew Massage Therapy, Cape Coral, FL

Cupping is one of the most asked-about techniques in the treatment room. Most people have seen the circular marks on an athlete's shoulders and wondered what happened. The technique itself is far gentler and far less dramatic than the photos suggest.

What cupping therapy is

Cupping uses small cups — typically silicone or glass — placed on the skin to create gentle suction. Where most massage strokes press down into tissue, cupping does something closer to the opposite: it gently lifts and decompresses the area beneath the cup. Cups may be left in place for a short time, or moved slowly across an oiled area in what is often called gliding or moving cupping.

Why massage therapists incorporate cupping

Therapists often reach for cupping when an area feels stubbornly tight and hands-on work alone is not creating the change they want. Because the sensation is different from compression, cupping gives the therapist another way to address a restricted area, and many clients find the lifting sensation surprisingly comfortable.

  • Broad, stubborn tightness across the upper back and shoulders
  • Areas where a client prefers less direct pressure
  • Transitional work alongside massage strokes within one session
  • Sessions where the client simply enjoys the sensation

What clients may experience

Most people describe cupping as a pulling or tugging sensation that stays comfortable throughout. It should never be painful — if it is, the suction is adjusted or the cup is moved. Stationary cupping can leave temporary circular discoloration that typically fades over several days. These marks are normal and are not bruises in the usual sense, though they can look like them.

Afterward, clients often say the area feels looser and less congested. As with any bodywork, drinking water and taking it easy for the rest of the day is a reasonable idea.

How cupping fits a customized massage

At Relax & Renew Massage Therapy in Cape Coral, cupping is not an upcharge or a separate menu item — it is included in the signature All-Inclusive Massage at no additional charge, along with aromatherapy and hot towels. Whether cupping is used in your session depends entirely on what your body needs that day, which is the whole idea behind a customized massage.

Common first-time questions

Will it hurt? It should not. Will I have marks? Sometimes, and they fade. How long does it take? Cupping is usually a portion of a session rather than the whole thing. Can I say no? Always — every technique in your session is optional and yours to decline.

Responsible expectations

Cupping is a bodywork technique that may complement massage and promote relaxation. It is not a cure for any condition and does not treat disease. If you take blood thinners, have a skin condition, or are under medical care, tell your therapist and check with your healthcare provider first.
