The Benefits of Assisted Stretching
By Tanja Rodriguez, LMT · Relax & Renew Massage Therapy, Cape Coral, FL
Almost everyone knows they should stretch. Almost no one does it consistently, and the stretches people do on their own tend to be rushed, held for a few seconds, and aimed at whatever already feels tight. Assisted stretching solves most of that by taking the work off you.
What assisted stretching is
In an assisted stretching session, you stay comfortably clothed and relaxed while your therapist positions your limbs, stabilizes the rest of your body, and guides each stretch through its range. Because you are not holding yourself in position, the muscle can actually let go — which is difficult to achieve when you are simultaneously balancing and bracing.
How a guided session works
The 75-minute Assisted Stretching session at Relax & Renew is fully guided from start to finish. Tanja moves systematically through the body, adjusting angle and depth based on your feedback, coordinating with your breathing, and spending extra time where you need it. Communication throughout keeps every stretch in a comfortable range.
- Hips and hip flexors, often tight from sitting
- Hamstrings, quads, and calves
- Shoulders, chest, and upper back
- Neck and the sides of the torso
Flexibility and range of motion
Assisted stretching is designed to improve flexibility, increase range of motion, and reduce muscle stiffness. Progress tends to be gradual rather than instant: one session usually feels good, and a series of sessions is where people notice a real difference in how far and how comfortably they can move.
Everyday mobility
Mobility is not only for athletes. Reaching a high shelf, turning to check a blind spot, getting up off the floor, walking without stiffness — these are the moments most clients care about. Many people describe feeling looser and lighter walking out than they did walking in.
How stretching complements massage
Massage and stretching address tightness from different angles. Massage works directly into the tissue; stretching addresses length and movement patterns. Combining them in a single visit is why Total Body Mobility exists: 90 minutes of therapeutic massage and assisted stretching blended throughout, so focused hands-on work and guided movement build on each other.
Responsible expectations
Assisted stretching may help ease feelings of muscular stiffness and support flexibility and mobility. It is not a treatment for injury or diagnosed conditions and does not replace physical therapy or medical care. Let your therapist know about any injuries, recent surgery, or joint concerns before your session.
